Getting Here

The Irish have a saying that once you start, you are half done. That’s kind of how getting here is. Once you start your journey, you’re nearly here.   The closest international airport to Fogo Island is Gander, Newfoundland (YQX). The best routes into Gander are through the international airports located in Halifax, NS (YHZ) and St. John's, NL (YYT) via Air Canada or Westjet. By arriving in Gander by early afternoon, you can get to Fogo Island in time for supper.

It's recommended to rent a car for getting to Fogo from Gander and back again, and also so that you also have a car for getting around on the Island. Most major car rental agencies have an office at both the Gander and St. John’s airports.  There is also the option of taking a taxi from the Gander airport to the ferry landing in Farewell with Busybee Taxi. We would be happy to book a cab for you or you can do that on your own by calling (709) 256-1444. Newfoundland is a very popular destination so it's suggested you book your rental car before you book your airfare.

Access to Fogo Island is by a passenger and vehicle ferry from Farewell, which is about an hour’s drive (85 km) from Gander along Route 330. The crossing is about 50 minutes and there are several indirect crossings per day across Hamilton Sound with a stop at neighbouring Change Islands.

Once you arrive onto the Island, Fogo Clay Studio is located a short 20 minute drive to the town of Fogo.

Getting here is part of the journey. Enjoy the adventure.
