Getting Here

The Irish have a saying that once you start, you are half done. That’s kind of how getting here is. Once you start your journey, you’re nearly here.   The closest international airport to Fogo Island is Gander, Newfoundland (YQX). The best routes into Gander are through the international airports located in Halifax, NS (YHZ) and St. John's, NL (YYT) via Air Canada or Westjet. By arriving in Gander by early afternoon, you can get to Fogo Island in time for supper.

If you would like to explore Fogo Island on your own then it is recommended that you rent a car in Gander or St. John's. Newfoundland is a very popular destination so it's suggested you book your rental car before you book your airfare. Otherwise, we will coordinate either a ride share with another retreat participant or a taxi from Gander airport to Farewell Harbour where you will catch the ferry to Fogo Island. You can email us to request this.

Access to Fogo Island is by a passenger and vehicle ferry from Farewell Harbour, which is about an hour’s drive (85 km) from Gander along Route 330. Just follow the signs for Fogo Island Ferry. The crossing is about 50 minutes and there are several indirect crossings per day across Hamilton Sound with a stop at neighbouring Change Islands. These crossings cannot be pre-booked and are on a first come, first served basis.

Once you arrive on the Island, Fogo Clay Studio is located a short 20 minute drive to the town of Fogo.

Here is link to the ferry schedule. Winter schedule is effective October 16 – May 14/Summer schedule is effective May 15 – October 15.
