 Workshop Description
This hands-on retreat will focus primarily on wheel throwing, with time also devoted to surface decoration and glazing. Open to all levels—from complete beginners to advanced potters—the week begins with throwing cylinders to assess each student’s experience. Beginners will progress through making mugs, bowls, plates, and lidded jars, while more experienced potters may take on complex forms such as teapots or casseroles. Students are encouraged to practice as much as possible, and the studio will remain open for use outside of teaching hours. At the end of the week, most work will be recycled, but you’ll be able to select a few favourite pieces for Sarah to glaze and fire in the studio. These will be shipped to you after the retreat (shipping costs not included).

About Sarah Fulford
Sarah Fulford, owner of Fogo Clay Studio, brings more than 40 years of experience to her teaching. Immersed in clay from childhood thanks to her sculptor mother, Sarah trained as a production potter in France at 17 and later apprenticed with a Master Potter in Korea. She holds degrees in Ceramics Engineering and Industrial Design, has taught at the Royal College of Art in London, and has worked internationally as a design consultant. Alongside her work on Fogo Island, she founded and ran several studios, including the thriving LOAM Clay Studio in Ottawa, which she sold in 2025.
